Noteworthy Game/Mechanic stuff:
- Staggered Ladder Queue
- At the request of many, I've implemented a system for ladder games to take into account who you've matched against over the last several games, and attempt to match you against a different person. I could explain the algorithm at hand, but I feel like I'd be wasting my breath when I can sum it up relatively quicky. The queue waits some time, letting people enter queue. Every period of time, it attempts to create battles with the people in queue. Now, if you've matches against someone recently, it will skip over them for one of these periods of time in an attempt to match you against someone else. Perceptive readers might come to the conclusion that it doesn't guarantee you don't rematch. That is correct, this change simply makes it take more time (time where you could match with someone else instead) to rematch the same person you just faced
- There might be some tweaks to the specifics of this algorithm, especially since it introduced a slew of issues for people "winning" the battle without ending it and other shenanigans. I think I've fixed all of those, but nothing ever stays fixed when I want to work on new characters or just getting the game out of unity
Buffs:
- Ashido Kano
- "Mask Absorption" damage cap lowered to 15
- "Group Slash" cooldown lowered to 1 turn
- Not much to say here. He's a little harder to kill now, and can make some use of "Group Slash" a bit more frequently
- Choe Neng Poww
- "Gigantic Cero" cooldown lowered to 3 turns
- Having been around long enough, people more or less have figured out that "Whale Rush" means it when it says "THE FIRST SKILL THIS CHARACTER USES THIS TURN WILL BE COUNTERED." It's no longer completely unreasonable to buff him, and in my time using him (as well as at least a few people in the community), "Gigantic Cero" always seems to be on cooldown when you need it
- Ryujin Jakka
- "Flame Tendrils" damage increased to 20
- "Entrapment" no longer damages Ryujin Jakka
- This character is fairly expensive, and his damage output should reflect that, given his overall lack of utility. Similarly, with him costing a decent chunk of energy to use, his passive more often then not ends up hurting him more than helping
- Uryuu (TLA)
- "Analysis" is now invisible. Only boosts non-affliction damage
- I'm frankly not sure why this skill was boosting all damage, but that doesn't make much sense for him to boost affliction damage. He doesn't want to hurt himself more with "Ginrei Kojaku" (he wasn't, which was a bug. That said, I don't want him to, hence the wording change). It isn't uncommon when facing Uryuu to see who has analysis on them, and just not use any harmful skills for 2 turns, causing him to waste the energy using the skill and see no benefit from it
- Yuzu Kurosaki- "Special Home-Made Cooking" heal increased to 30
- "Medical Treatment" destructible defense increased to 15
- I've had decent success in the past increasing the destructible defense a skill provides by 5, I wonder if it'll work again?
Tweaks:
- Jackie Tristian
- All harmful skills now apply mud
- "Sludge kick" damage now only deals 10 more damage per stack of mud
- The original intent of "Sludge Kick" was to punish people for "dirtying" up the battlefield. However, skills apply a lot of effects, and balancing around that is not an easy task. The aim here is to shift her power to be more self reliant and allow her to still be a strong anti-stun character. She's on my radar, and if she continues to be a problem, I now have substantially more straight-forward avenues to nerf her
Random Tip:
When using characters with counters/reflects, your opponent might anticipate you using it to protect your most important character. It might be worth using that counter on someone weaker that your opponent might try to spike out while anticipating the counter isn't on them
Noteworthy Bug Fixes:
- Jackie Tristian's "Mud" no longer reduces duration of stuns when the person affected by mud is ignoring harmful effects
- Winning battles now correctly affects clan statistics
- Hueco Mundo Kenpachi's "Kendo" is now correctly classified as a damaging skill

Buffs:
- Grand Fisher - "Hollow Bait" cooldown lowered to 1 turn
- The power from Grand Fisher comes from using "Hollow Grab" on a target affected by "Hollow Bait" to neuter their damage output and boost yours for several turns. Not baiting someone hurts, so a more forgiving cooldown should help him to perform a bit better
- Riruka Dokugamine- "I Permit, Dollhouse Entry" cost lowered to 1 random
- Given how problematic she was a couple of patches ago, clearly increasing this skill's power is not the way to go. Making it more accessible however should allow her to pump up the jam, so to speak
Nerfs:
- Chrysalis Aizen- "Shatter" now uses only destructible defense Chrysalis Aizen has applied on himself (enemy destructible defense component of this skill remains unchanged). Cooldown lowered to 1.
- Some of you might remember a while back when Orihime had her shield nerfed because of the synergy between her and Chrysalis Aizen. There was a bit more to it, because Orihime had been strong for a while. However, as more characters introduce destructible defense skills, "Shatter" will continue to be a problem unless this changes. He still deals a good chunk of damage to attacking enemies. I'll be keeping an eye on him since this is kind of a big change. Don't be surprised to see him in another balance
- Giriko Kutzusawa- "Time Tells No Lies" passive damage reverted back to 5
- I was on the fence about buffing him in the first place, but was talked into it. Then, I fixed 2 bugs with him that made him even stronger. He's a little over the top now, so I'm reverting that change and seeing where that leaves him
- Kyoko Haida- "Slay" no longer activates "Cursed Aura" if it kills an enemy
- For those who've been keeping track of Kyoko's state, you'll recall she received 3 buffs: 2 to "Cursed Aura (damage + ignore invul), and this effect to slay. Time has shown that it was a little too much, so I'm dialing this change back
Tweaks:
- Ashido Kano- Fixed wording on "Single Slice" to make it clear the execute threshold changes. Now deals 10 bonus damage while invul instead of double damage. Execute threshold still doubles.
- "Mask Absorbtion" now ignores damage from the first new harmful skill, caps damage to him at 20, and is invisible. Cooldown increased to 2 turns
- "Group Slash" no longer passively changes skill cost/cooldown
- "Mask Shield" no longer grants damage reduction, cooldown reduced to 4
- Plagued with bugs since release, it's hard to blame anyone for not wanting to use him. Every time I fixed a bug, 2 more would take its place. In fact, going to make the changes to him, I ran into another bug that made me say "to hell with it, I'm gonna make some bigger changes." He hasn't received any love since release since he was buggy, which is kind of funny considering who Ashido is in the anime. Left alone and forgotten about. I'm going to monitor him and see where these changes put him, and react accordingly
- Yuzu Kurosaki- "Summon Raku" now makes the target unable to reduce damage or become invulnerable for 1 turn
- "Medical Treatment" only grants destructible defense and damage reduction once per turn
- Medical treatment with heals could lead to some pretty cheesy teams. My intent with the buff to "Summon Raku" was to give her more utility (she is a supporty character after all) to make up for less strength in "Medical Treatment." I'm keeping an eye on her
Random Tip:
Noteworthy Bug Fixes:- Stealing Uryu Ishida's "Heavenly Wild Puppet Suit" as Traitor Ginjo no longer makes Traitor Ginjo's skills in slots 2 and 3 target aoe
- Fixed strange duration issue with Kuchiki Rukia's "Spirit Glove"
- Fixed Race condition with Giriko Kutzusawa's "Number Attack" stacks applying in unexpected ways
- Fixed issues where reflects would not consider if the character was ignoring the reflects
- Fixed issue with Byakuya (TLA) going into close range from non-new damage

Buffs:
- Giriko Kutzusawa - Damage penalty from "Time Tells No Lies" increased to 10
- The penalty for violating the contract with time doesn't feel all that impactful, especially since it's random who even gets affected. This should help turn up the heat a bit
Nerfs:
- Ginjo Kugo- "Cross of Scaffold, Manifest" now ends when Ginjo dies
- This can hardly be considered a nerf, but while I was fixing a bug, he died on my team and I noticed the effect still on the enemy and just thought "why?"
- Komamura Sajin- "Heavenly Fist" cooldown increased to 2
- This skill's synergy with "Overwhelming Reiatsu" is kind of nutty, so this will help disconnect a bit. This character might receive a bit more punishment depending on how other parts of this update shake out, but for the sake of not killing this character completely, Especially since he's very expensive and doesn't work well alone. I'm keeping him here for the moment
- Jackie Tristian- "Dirty Disrupt" Energy cost increased to 1 white 1 random
- "Sludge Kick" cooldown increased to 1 turn
- With a free prep, Jackie's cheap skills look even more enticing. For that reason, the cooldown on sludge kick was increased because, while I'm not dis-satisfied by the cost, she is using it pretty frequently. Alternatively, you aren't prepping her and just using her anti destructible defense in tandem with the helpful/harmful remove. For those people, she has no prep needed and can jump into it. Adding the cost is meant to help slow the roll a bit. I'll be keeping an eye on her if that ends up being a bit too harsh, but I'm relatively confident in her strength
- Traitor Ginjo- "Power Drain" no longer steals health, no longer steals energy, and base damage lowered to 20
- Much like several other mechanics that have been introduced, I was not quite sure how strong the ability to steal helpful effects would be. Unlike some mechanics that have been introduced, this one is actually pretty damn strong. I like it, and it's certainly cannon to Ginjo's character, so I want to keep it. That said, I have to take some strength away from him if it's going to stay
- Ukitake Joushiro- "Thunder and Water Seal" invulnerability reduced to 1 turn
- Let me paint a picture for you: over 2 years ago, Komamura, Ukitake, and Kaien were running through ladder. That team is still running around in ladder, though some have modified the tea, by removing Kaien and adding in an already strong character, and keeping that character permanently protected while they dish out crazy amounts of damage. I was ready to nerf this guy back when Hueco Mundo Kenpachi was the third character in that team. I ultimately changed my mind and nerfed Kenny, and while That change ended up being pretty healthy for him, that still left the problem of Ukitake covering the ass of whichever character was deemed strongest. I could go on and list more teams, but the important point is that Ukitake has been the common denominator. A 1 cost 2 turn 2 ally invulnerability is incredibly strong. Hell, for 1 cost, most characters can make just themselves invulnerable. That invulnerable also doesn't make their damaging skill stun and give them access to another counter. I'll be monitoring Ukitake closely, and if a compensation buff is needed, he'll get it
- Yamamoto Genryuusai- "Bonus Damage" stacks from "Reduce all Creation to Ash, Ryuujin Jakka" end when Yamamoto Dies
- Sort of similarly to Ginjo, these stacks (used to) serve no purpose being on the battlefield one Yamamoto is dead. However, I'd be lying if I said this wasn't targeting a specific team that's been seeing some use. Since Jackie cannot be stunned, a somewhat common strategy is to stun and eliminate other characters on her team, which seems like solid counter play. That said, by the time you kill those people, if the battle field is littered with these stacks, Jackie really pumps out damage at that point
Tweaks:
- Senna- "Blade of Recollection" no longer grants energy to allies, heal lowered to 10, and damage threshold removed
- "Call Forth the Twilight, Mirokumaru" cost lowered to 1 red
- Ever since her release, Senna has been a wildly strong utility. The effect from "Blade of Recollection" would be crazy strong without a damage threshold, and she'd no doubt be an integral part of every team. Even with the threshold, she's still very strong with those characters. The heal, combined with energy gain lead to old Ganju receiving a nerf. Granted, old Ganju was pretty damn strong anyway, but simply having a skill that did 30 damage opened many doors for ordinarily weaker characters to be super stars. Characters in game right now, such as Grand Fisher who could realistically stand to be buffed, cannot be buffed without making Senna more prevalent, and further exacerbating the problem. We could choose to follow in the footsteps of old Soul Arena and remove more 30+ damage skills, which doesn't really address the problem, rather than just limit the spread of the issue. I could nerf characters with skills dealing 30+ damage in other ways, but that would be similar to drain teams prior to the change, where it just increases the dependency those characters have on Senna because they would be weaker on any other team. It was clear that she was meant to be a support-oriented character, so I think the Change to "Call Forth the Twilight, Mirokumaru" will allow easier synergy with characters that grant destructible defense, and the no-longer conditional heal will let other characters who ordinarily not synergize with her at all be able to team up with her well. We'll see though, it's entirely possible I need to look at her again in the future
Random Tip:
Sometimes, you'll be in a position where a character on your team can be killed by your opponent the next turn, and you have a counter you could use to save them. If your opponent is aware that you could use that counter, they might avoid hitting your character to avoid the counter. As such, you could try bluffing your counter, which would save the energy since you wouldn't be using it, and make a powerful play your next turn!
Noteworthy Bug Fixes:- Yukio Vorarlberna's "Invaders must die" emblem now disappears from himself when he dies
- Yukio Vorarlberna's "Save State Load" had several janky interactions fixed
- The calculation to determine whether or not a character is invulnerable or not now works properly
- Jackie Tristian's "Mud" stacks can no longer be removed
- Jackie Tristian's "Dirty Boots" passive can no longer be removed
- Butterfly Aizen no longer prevents the turn from being passed (causing a loss on some poor soul's end) when he's targeted by a new skill in niche circumstances

- "Manifestation" can no longer be removed
- This "buff" is aimed at fixing some buggy interactions when it gets stolen by Traitor Ginjo. This is the easiest way to fix them, and doesn't require a complete engine overhaul
Noteworthy Bug Fixes:- Resurreccion Szayel's "Gabriel" no longer creates a circular reference and crashes the match when stolen by Traitor Ginjo
- Jackie Tristian correctly changes skillsets when the destructible defense from "Sludge Armor" is removed
- Characters who are "invulnerable" while ignoring helpful effects now take damage the way they're supposed to
- Fullbringer Ichigo lvl 3's "Substitute Shinigami Badge" can no longer be removed

- "Makeshift Zangetsu" damage upped to 20
- Fullbringer Ichigo lvl 3- "Getsuga Shuriken" now deals 5 more damage with each use of the skill. The destructible defense it grants is no longer limited to the first person
- "Getsuga Wave" damage increased to 40
- Pre release, this character was the strongest of the batch. I took him out back and shot him, apparently doing more damage than I intended to. These buffs were all things his base kit included, but that I've added back. If he needs more, I've got more effects I can give back
Nerfs:
- Byakuya (TLA)- "Senbonzakura Kageyoshi" no longer refreshes the duration of active "Scatter's."
- I get the vibe he's getting off easy, but we'll see. "Scatter" gives dd on par with what other dd skills give, but with extra goodies and cheaper. That said, it's also where his power comes from. I'll keep a close eye on him
- Traitor Ginjo- "Power Drain" cooldown upped to 3 turns
- "Enhancement" no longer gives energy when he's targeted
- Given that there's no precedent for the strength of skills stealing effects, I really wasn't sure how strong Ginjo would be. There were even whispers of buffing him pre-release. That said, the effect is strong, and I think it's cool. However, combined with the rest of his kit, it's just a bit too much, so turning off his "battery pack" should help
Tweaks:
- Jackie Tristian- "Dirty Disrupt" cooldown increased to 2 turns
- "Sludge Kick" now does 10 damage for every harmful effect (rather than harmful skill)
- Miscommunication before release, which is why sludge kick wasn't doing this already. However, her base form has been performing well, so I need to dial that back a bit
Noteworthy Bug Fixes:- Byakuya (TLA)'s passive will no longer go away if he's invulnerable to friendly skills
- Giriko Kutzusawa's "Time Tells No Lies" now correctly applies timers, and no longer has a 20% chance to crash the server
- Jackie Tristian's "Dirty Boots" can no longer be removed
- Byakuya (TLA)'s stun from "Safe Zone Disturbance" no longer ends immediately
- Fullbringer Ichigo lvl 2's "Fullbring Defense" no longer has a 0 turn cooldown
- Giriko Kutzusawa's "Cierge Countdown" now correctly makes the target ignore harmful stuns
- Fullbringer Ichigo lvl 3's destructible defense from "Getsuga Shuriken" is no longer applied to him instead of the person who triggered it
- Inner Ichigo's "Inner Ichigo Combat" now correctly checks if the target is ignoring harmful duration decrease effects
- Byakuya (TLA)'s skill now have the correct ignore checks happening
- Skills that ignore harmful effect removal no longer ignore helpful skills removing helpful effects
- Aaroniero Arruruerie's "Manifestation" now correctly transforms the person the effect is on, rather than the hard coded position he was in
